My winemaking philosophy which I developed early on in my career is based on the concept that wine is a natural food. As such, the ultimate enjoyment of wine is as a graceful and harmonious accompaniment to a meal, whether it be simple or sublime.

While most of my wines are enjoyable by themselves, it is with food that they really shine, and reveal all of their nuances and textures. To me the best wines have the ability to bring out the best in the food they are paired with and conversely the food brings out the best in the wines.

We are pleased to release another vintage of Syrah from the exceptional Alisos Vineyard located a few miles east of Los Alamos. The site where our Syrah grapes come from has moderately rocky soils and a southern exposure, two factors which contribute to this Syrah's intense character.

Harvest occurred relatively late in the season on October 28th, with the grapes measuring 24.7 Brix. The grapes were entirely destemmed and crushed into a small open top fermenter. After a relatively short fermentation period of 10 days, the wine was pressed off and settled in a tank before being transferred to French and Russian oak barrels. The new oak component was limited to just 33%. After aging in barrels for 26 months, the wine was fined, filtered and bottled in December 2012.

The wine has the typical blackish purple, opaque color that characterizes Alisos Vineyard Syrah. The aromas are of wild berries, black pepper and mint. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied with rich flavors of berries, herbs and a hint of oak vanillin. The wine has relatively high acidity, which contributes to the persistent and long finish. The moderate tannins indicate the wine will benefit from a few years of cellaring.

Enjoy with hearty meals such as lamb shanks and stews.
