My winemaking philosophy which I developed early on in my career is based on the concept that wine is a natural food. As such, the ultimate enjoyment of wine is as a graceful and harmonious accompaniment to a meal, whether it be simple or sublime.

While most of my wines are enjoyable by themselves, it is with food that they really shine, and reveal all of their nuances and textures. To me the best wines have the ability to bring out the best in the food they are paired with and conversely the food brings out the best in the wines.

It’s always a pleasure to release the new vintage of Cuvée June, our Pink Wine named after our granddaughter. The timing is also perfect, as this is a great wine to enjoy with summertime meals.

This year’s blend is composed of Grenache from Estelle Vineyard located in the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, and Syrah from Clover Creek Vineyard located near Santa Ynez. The Syrah grapes were harvested on October 4th and the Grenache grapes the following day. The much lighter pigmented Grenache grapes soaked for 30 hours to reach the color intensity I was looking for, while the Syrah soaked for just 7 hours. The grapes were combined and pressed together. The juice was transferred to a settling tank for one day and then racked to another tank to begin fermentation. After fermentation the wine was transferred to stainless steel drums to age. It was bottled in March 2012.

The wine is a vibrant salmon color. The aromas are of dried tropical fruits and cantaloupe. On the palate, the wine is soft with flavors of watermelon and cantaloupe. The acidity is lower this year, giving the wine a lush, soft texture.

Serve this wine chilled with pairings that include crab cakes, seafood salads and Asian cuisine.
